Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) or Ethylene Glycol is a colorless, odorless, low viscous fluid having hygroscopic nature. It has low volatility and is fully miscible in water, alcohol, and other organic fluids. MEG is made from ethylene or ethylene oxide. During the process of manufacturing MEG, two co-products DEG (diethylene glycol) and TEG(triethylene glycol) are obtained. It has low volatility and a high boiling point.
MEG is mainly used in producing Polyester Fibre, Fabrics, PET(polyethylene terephthalate), and antifreeze applications. It has applications in various fields like polyester, upholstery, carpets, pillows, fleece fabrics, paper, adhesives, leather, cellophane, printing inks, chemical intermediates for solvents, lacquers, enamels, synthetic rubber, latex paints, cosmetics, toners, plasticizers, synthetic wax, processing aids, aircraft anti-icers and de-icers, capacitors, lubricants, dispersants, surface coatings, asphalt emulsions, hydraulic brake fluids, heat transfer fluids, engine coolants, and automotive industry.
